The Power of Istikhara
Being grown-up in a Shia Muslim family, I knew about Istikhara since childhood. My grandfather, father and uncles used to take Istikhara for matters where decision was not trivial. Our neighbours at native place used to come to my grandfather to get Istikhara done for their indecisive issues.
I did not feel the need for Istikhara for myself until I entered adulthood and life was at crossroads. I got Istikharas done from my uncles and maulanas only for complex matters like buying property, job transfers, selecting kid's schools, and so on.
Before citing examples from my personal life to reinforce lessons learnt, I bring out what I learnt about Istikhara.
Now, let me cite examples from my personal life where I did abide Istikhara and I was saved and also, when I did not and facing consequences of it. Examples are written bit long to make you understand them better and use these lessons in your life. An honest request to you is to learn from my mistakes.
Buying Property: In 2013, I wanted to buy a property from a reputed builder. When I reached builder's office along with my wife to book property, it suddenly struck my mind to get Istikhara done. My wife was apprehensive of my idea as the builder was a reputed one and her cousin worked there. In the backdrop of her mind, she may be fearing that Istikhara may come against buying that property.
So, I called my uncle for Istikhara. I used to get Istikhara done from my uncles as they are very religious and paband namaazi. Istikhara was taken 3 times. Although, Istikhara was taken with sunnat niyat (intention), it came 'No' for that property. My uncle was getting annoyed on my getting Istikhara repeated again and again. The fourth time, it came 'Yes'. So, we entered the builder's office and booked that property. We were to get it by the end of 2015. Its now 2020 and we did not get hold of property yet. The builder got bankrupt in 2016. Now, I understand why Istikhara was against buying the property. We can look only to some of the existing facts like builder reputation but Allah was guiding me into the future. I ignored and so, facing the consequences - don't know whether I will get refund of amount paid or possession of property and when. The worst being neither getting refund nor property. Please pray this not to happen and I should get property or refund.
Career: Having worked for 20 years at same workplace, I decided to switch to another office in same organization. I had one such office in my mind. The Director there was my earlier boss with whom I had a good repo. Whether to continue at same place or take transfer to the place I had in my mind was very confusing. So, I got Istekhara done and only once. It came 'No'. I dropped the idea of transfer having already facing the consequences of ignoring Istikhara in property matter. To my surprise, my decision to go with Istikhara was very right. That office was scrapped and my boss along with others were sent back to other offices in same organization.
Choosing kid's school: My elder son and we also wanted my younger son to be admitted to school where elder son was studying. Every year, we take Istikhara. It's a big 'No'. So, we did not switch school as we have experience of both ignoring Istikahar in property case and saving myself by obeying Istikhara in case of transfer.
In 2020, I again thought of switching office. There were many vacancies in other offices of my organization. Istikhara for some was 'No' and for some 'Yes'. The Istikhara for an office which was 'No'
few months back becomes 'Yes' with strong favoring description. Forgot to tell earlier that Istekharas are of many types and can be taken in multiple ways. Basic Istikhara comes in 'Yes' or 'No'. Another Istikhara (Sajjadiya one) comes with 'Good' or 'Bad; along with some descriptive comment.
Its again a lesson and easy to understand that a 'No' Istikhara' may turn to 'Yes' over time or vice-versa. The world is dynamic and situation keeps changing. So, the non-favourable situation may become favourable over time. It's beyond our comprehension. Only Allah knows the future.
So, for complex matters, if you go for Istikhara then abide by it and faith in it as it is a guidance of God for you into future.
